In 1975, David made a second attempt at marriage, exchanging vows with his childhood sweetheart, a “beard” named Cookie.

“Ladies and gentlemen love me.”

— Uncle David —

“Cookie loved him and she wanted to marry him. She didn’t care what he was.”

— Aunt Denise —

“His groomsmen wore tacky-ass, gold crushed, velvet tuxedos. Albert was in the wedding and Denise’s friend, Wayne.”

— My Mom —

“I think that wedding took place in the same banquet hall as his wedding with Jimmy.”

— Albert —

“No, he married Cookie at Lee Memorial AME Church.”

— Aunt Denise —

“Our father was so happy.”

— Uncle Doug —

“Cookie’s daddy was mad as hell. He gave her away, but not willingly. Her brother was mad too. He didn’t care for David.”

— Aunt Denise —

“The groomsmen were hot in them crushed velvet suits. And all of them were gay. By the time the reception started, they were dripping in sweat, so they tied their tuxedo shirts into sissy knots and headed to the dance floor.”

— My Mom —

“David got to swinging his hips. Cookie’s brother did not like that. He chased David around the dance floor. He was gonna catch him and kick his ass.”

— Aunt Denise —

“He never did catch him. They just went running around in circles.”

— Albert —
